It was our great privilege to sponsor the Young Carer Award at the Radio Pembrokeshire Young Achiever Awards 2013. Sheena Umanee, co-owner of Care in Hand, was delighted to present the Award to this year’s exceptional winner, Owen Powney.

Sheena like everyone was touched by the exceptional way in which Owen cares for his mother Clare. In her moving nomination for her son, Clare wrote,

‘I have always had scoliosis but in 2010 my condition got worse leaving me bed ridden with very low mobility. My son was 5 at the time and it hit him hard.

‘Now 3 years on... he has grown so much. He helps me round the house - he does washing, cleans and a tiny bit of cooking -...mostly toast! When I have a bad day ... he and his brother get me through. He even does shows with his brother to cheer me up. Through all this he does have his own struggles to contend with - he has Aspergers and ADHD. I am so proud to call him my son.’

It was no surprise that at the end of the evening Owen also won the Gold Award with the University of Wales - Trinity Saint David. This was an additional award given to one of the night's award winners who our judging panel thought deserved extra special recognition.

Our many congratulations to Owen!
